score-viewer

An MEI score viewer for reading and listening to critical editions.

GitHub npm Cancionero de Miranda Paper (DLfM 2025)

The tono “Deseos de un imposible” in the digital edition of the Cancionero de Miranda.

score-viewer is a React component for reading and listening to scores encoded in MEI and rendered with Verovio. It can also be embedded in any page with an <iframe>. It is free software, under the MIT license.

  • Score, paginated, with zoom, section titles, a choice of verses, original clefs, harmonic analysis and undoing the encoded transposition.
  • Critical apparatus. Editorial interventions are highlighted by type, and readers can switch between the readings of a variant.
  • Audio synchronized with the score: notes are animated while they sound and the score turns its own pages.
  • Facsimile of the sources beside the score. When the MEI links notes to the images, the facsimile follows the music while it plays.
  • Texts: introduction, poem and notes. Interface in English and Spanish.

It is the reading interface of the digital critical edition of the Cancionero de Miranda, a songbook of 77 tonos humanos copied at the Royal Chapel in Lisbon in the late seventeenth century. Its design was presented in the paper The Cancionero de Miranda Edition: Leveraging Open Source Technologies for Multi-Modal Music Publication, at the 12th International Conference on Digital Libraries for Musicology (DLfM 2025).
